Dictation
What happens between speech and text
Cleanup strips filler, applies your self-corrections, fixes punctuation and casing, and shapes the result for wherever it's going. It never answers you, and it never adds anything you didn't say.
Styles
The style comes from the app you're dictating into. Pin one per app if you disagree, and the pin always wins.
- Message — chat clients. Short, conversational, no invented greeting or sign-off.
- Email — mail clients. Paragraphs and full punctuation. A greeting only if you said one.
- Notes — note apps. A simple list if you enumerated things, short paragraphs otherwise.
- Code — editors and terminals. Spoken symbols become literal: “dash dash verbose” is
--verbose. It won't write code for you. - Prose — documents. Complete sentences and paragraphs.
- Verbatim — every word you said, with only casing and punctuation fixed.
Spoken punctuation
Say “comma”, “full stop”, “question mark”, “new line”, “new paragraph”, “bullet point” or “quote unquote” and you get the punctuation, not the word.
Editing by voice
Select some text first, then hold your key and say what to do with it. “Make this shorter”, “fix the grammar”, “turn this into bullet points”, “translate to German”. Your selection gets replaced with the result.
If what you say is ordinary dictation rather than an instruction, it just replaces the selection, cleaned up as usual. You don't have to say which one you meant.
Languages
The language comes from your speech. You don't set it. You can also dictate in one language and have the text arrive in another.
When cleanup can't help
If cleanup errors, times out, answers you instead of editing you, or returns something implausible, you get the raw transcript instead and the pill says so. Dictation always produces something.
Limits
- Free plan: 2,000 words a week, recordings up to 2 minutes.
- Paid plan: unlimited under fair use, recordings up to 15 minutes.
- Clipboard restore is text only. A clipboard over 16 KiB isn't restored, because a truncated restore would corrupt the original.
